Inheriting or gifting a home in Spain: what do you arrange in advance?

Inheriting a home in Spain or gifting one to your children is not an ordinary transfer of ownership. You deal with succession law, taxes, a notary and the registration of the property. If you live in the Netherlands or Belgium, your home country can play a role too. The most important preparation is therefore not to have a Spanish deed drawn up straight away, but first to determine who owns what, who should receive what and which rules apply to your situation.

This guide helps you ask the right questions before making a choice. A gift is not automatically more advantageous than an inheritance. And a favourable Spanish tax scheme does not mean the whole transfer is almost free of charge.
