Living in Altea

One of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful places to call home.

The village

Discover one of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful places to call home

There are places you visit, and there are places that quietly become part of your future. Altea is one of those rare places.

Between the glittering Mediterranean and the imposing Sierra de Bernia, Altea is considered one of the most beautiful villages on the Costa Blanca. With its whitewashed houses, cobbled streets, iconic blue-domed church and sweeping sea views, it breathes a life that feels authentic, elegant and wonderfully relaxed.

Where many coastal towns have changed beyond recognition in recent decades, Altea has carefully preserved its soul. Strict building regulations protect the historic skyline, keeping the old town one of the most picturesque on the Mediterranean. No tower blocks, but charming squares, studios, independent galleries and restaurants where locals and visitors gather all year round.

Life here moves at its own pace. Mornings begin with coffee on a sunny terrace as the fishing boats return to the harbour. Afternoons drift through the historic centre, sailing along the coast from Marina Greenwich, or discovering hidden coves with crystal-clear water. As evening falls, the hum of conversation drifts through the squares beneath the famous blue dome of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo.

It is that effortless rhythm that draws people from all over Europe. Some come for a holiday home, others seek a quieter way of life. Many never leave.

Whether you dream of a contemporary villa with panoramic sea views, a luxurious apartment above the marina or a characterful village house in the old centre — Altea offers an exceptional quality of life in every season. More than three hundred days of sunshine, excellent restaurants, beautiful beaches, world-class sailing, golf courses nearby and a spectacular mountain landscape.

At Tu Travesía we believe buying a home is never only about bricks and mortar. It is about finding a place that fits the life you want to live. Altea does exactly that.

Why Altea

Why choose Altea?

Every destination along the Costa Blanca has its own character. Calpe is known for the Peñón de Ifach, Moraira for its exclusive coastal living, Jávea for its blend of dramatic landscapes and lively beaches. Altea is different.

It has no need to impress through scale or glamour. It enchants with authenticity, elegance and an atmosphere that has stayed remarkably unchanged for generations. Artists are drawn by the light, sailors by the sheltered coast, food lovers by everything from traditional tapas bars to refined cuisine, nature lovers by the Sierra de Bernia and the hidden coves.

The village is large enough for everything you need, and small enough to stay personal and welcoming. International residents live easily alongside Spanish families — cosmopolitan, without losing its authentic soul. And unlike many seasonal destinations, Altea stays alive all year, with markets, festivals, open-air concerts and a mild climate that makes outdoor living possible in every season.

A day in Altea

A day in Altea

Imagine opening your windows to the church bells rolling softly over the hills. The morning sun glints on the sea as the fishing boats return with their catch. The cafés around the Plaza de la Iglesia slowly fill with locals over their first coffee, while the narrow streets of the old town stay wonderfully quiet.

Later you stroll past the studios and galleries that have made Altea beloved by artists for decades. Every corner reveals another spectacular view of the coast, framed by white façades covered in bougainvillea.

After lunch — at the marina among the elegant boats, or in a hidden restaurant below the old town — the afternoon offers endless possibilities: sailing along the coast, paddleboarding in the clear water of Cala Mascarat, hiking in the Sierra de Bernia, or simply relaxing on the beach. As the day ends, the blue dome glows against the evening sky and the terraces fill with laughter. Dinner is never rushed. The sea is never far.

The old town

The old town — the heart and soul of Altea

Every village has a centre. Altea has a soul. The historic Casco Antiguo made Altea famous throughout Spain and far beyond. Built on a hill above the sea, its maze of narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and flower-filled balconies has remained almost unchanged for centuries.

No shopping malls. No high-rise hotels. No heavy traffic. Instead, quiet alleys where every corner reveals a postcard. Bougainvillea cascades over white walls, hand-painted tiles adorn the doorways and small boutiques invite you in for local art, jewellery and ceramics.

Wandering through the old town is an experience in itself. There is no right route — the beauty lies in getting lost. One moment you are on a little square shaded by orange trees, a few steps later the sea suddenly appears between the rooftops, endless to the horizon.

The landmark

The blue-domed church

At the highest point of the old town stands Nuestra Señora del Consuelo, the church that became the symbol of Altea. Its unmistakable blue-and-white ceramic dome is visible for miles and is one of the most recognisable landmarks on the Costa Blanca.

The square around it, the Plaza de la Iglesia, is one of the village’s most beloved meeting places. By day you relax on a sunny terrace with panoramic views of the coast. By night it turns magical: musicians play, lights illuminate the square and the restaurants welcome guests for long Mediterranean dinners.

Art & culture

Art, culture and creativity

Altea has long been known as one of Spain’s artistic villages. Its special light, calm and inspiring landscape have drawn painters, sculptors, musicians and designers for decades.

Small galleries show the work of local artists, while artisan studios craft ceramics, paintings, jewellery and traditional leatherwork. Throughout the year, exhibitions, cultural events and open-air concerts bring the streets and squares to life. The Fine Arts faculty of the nearby Miguel Hernández University has reinforced Altea’s reputation as a place where creativity flourishes.

Marina Greenwich — Campomanes

A few minutes south of the old town lies one of the most exclusive marinas on the Costa Blanca. Marina Greenwich, also known as Puerto Deportivo Luis Campomanes, is unlike any other in Spain.

It sits exactly on the Greenwich Meridian — longitude 0°00′00″ — and is one of the few marinas in the world located right on the prime meridian, where east meets west.

Surrounded by the dramatic Mascarat cliffs and crystal-clear water, the marina radiates an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere. Luxury yachts sit alongside sailing boats, waterfront cafés and stylish restaurants — the perfect spot for a long lunch or a dinner at sunset. For boat owners there are excellent facilities and direct access to the finest stretches of coastline; for everyone else, it is simply a wonderful place to spend an afternoon.

Beaches and hidden coves

Altea’s coastline is different from Spain’s broad sandy beaches: more natural, quieter and wonderfully unspoilt, with pebble beaches and coves where the water stays exceptionally clear all year.
